For the first time, two Russian restaurants hit the top twenty in the world

The announcement of the 50 best restaurants in the world in 2019 took place in Singapore. Number one, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants experts named Mirazur in the French Menton. For his boss and co-owner Mauro Colagreco, this is the second big success this year. In January, he received the third Michelin star and became the first three-star foreign chef in a French guide. The Argentinean Colagreco studied in Buenos Aires and France, worked with Bernard Luazo, Alain Passard, Guy Marten and Alain Ducasse. He (together with partners) opened Mirazur in April 2006; six months later, the restaurant was recognized by the Gault Millau guide “Discovery of the Year”, and in February 2007 received the first Michelin star. In 2012, Mirazur received a second star, and in 2014 took 11th place in the ranking of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Mirazur’s concept is fresh local products in a modern processing and serving. Part of the products Colagreco grows in his own garden at the restaurant. The Mirazur Universe set menu is served from Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner and costs 260 euros.

The second place went to the Noma restaurant, which opened in a new place in Copenhagen after a year-long break. The third line is at the Spanish restaurant Asador Etxebarri. Her menu includes natural desserts based on fresh fruits. The best female chef named Daniela Soto-Innes, chef of the New York restaurant Cosme. Also this year, a nomination was introduced for chefs active in socially significant projects. It was received by Jose Andres, chief and founder of ThinkFoodGroup. Andres was born in Spain, trained with Ferrand Adria in El Bulli, then at 22 he moved to the United States. A few years ago, he founded the social and educational project World Central Kitchen, one of the activities of which was the catering for victims of natural disasters. Andres was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for him. Chefs themselves choose another laureate. This year, the famous Chef’s Alain Passard from Arpege restaurant received the Chef’s Choice Award.

Russians are progressing
For the first time, two Russian restaurants, Moscow’s White Rabbit and Twins Garden, first hit the top half of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. For both establishments, this is an improvement in last year’s results. White Rabbit climbed two lines and took 13th place, and Twins Garden immediately stepped over 53 lines and got to 19th. Only the trick of the Noma team, who returned to their native Copenhagen after a year of touring and opened a restaurant in a new place (Noma had been four times the first in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants rating), prevented Twins Garden from receiving a prize for the most progressive restaurant.

A week earlier, the organizers of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants published an expanded top ranking, places from 51st to 120th, which included three more Russian restaurants – Moscow Selfie and St. Petersburg Harvest and Kokoko, they took 65th, 92- e and 104th places. Thus, this year was the most productive for the Russian restaurant industry at The World’s Best Restaurants.

Who and how choose the best
The World’s Best Restaurants rating is compiled by Restaurant Magazine (William Reed Business Media) annually since 2002. The best are identified by secret ballot. The jury, formed on a regional basis, includes restaurant critics, chefs, restaurateurs and recognized gourmets.
Starting this year, the rating is being formed according to the new rules. Restaurants, at least once taking 1st place, cease to participate in the annual vote and move to the new Best of the Best category. Since this year, Osteria Francescana Massimo Bottura, the El Celler de Can Roca of the Rock brothers, Eleven Madison Park Daniel Hamm, The French Laundry by Thomas Keller, the first version of Noma Rene Redzepi, The Fat Duck Haston Blumenthal and El Bulli Ferran Adria are included there. Also this year, the organizers decided to pay more attention to issues of inclusiveness.
